Albania is set to import natural gas from Azerbaijan starting in 2026 through the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), marking a pivotal step in the country’s energy diversification strategy. The announcement was made by Ceno Klosi, Albania’s Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, as reported by News.Az.
While TAP already crosses Albanian territory on its route to Italy, this will be the first time Albania receives gas from the pipeline. Klosi described the initiative as a strategic project aimed at addressing domestic gas supply shortfalls and improving energy security for end users.
“Albania will receive gas for the first time via the TAP pipeline,” Klosi stated. “The pipeline already passes through our territory and extends to Italy, but we may consider a northern branch in the future.”
Beginning in 2026, TAP is expected to receive an additional 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas per year. Of this, Italy will receive 1 billion cubic meters, while Albania is allocated 200 million cubic meters annually.
The move is part of a broader European effort to diversify gas imports and reduce dependence on traditional sources, enhancing regional energy integration and resilience.
