U.S. Pushes Japan to Invest in Controversial Alaska LNG Pipeline

by Yuki

The United States is intensifying its efforts to convince Japan to formally invest in the Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline, which, if completed, would provide U.S. LNG to Japan through the shortest route between the two nations.

In February, U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the possibility of a joint venture with Japan during a summit with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The following month, Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy traveled to Tokyo to advocate for the project with both the Japanese government and private industry. The pressure is expected to continue, with a high-level energy summit in Alaska next month that could see the U.S. push Japan further to commit to the $44 billion (nearly ¥6.7 trillion) pipeline.

However, Japan’s involvement in the project remains uncertain, as energy companies express concerns over its profitability and feasibility. Takashi Uchida, president of the Japan Gas Association, which represents the country’s major gas companies, said during an April 23 news conference that, although the project’s basic design is still being finalized, it is already clear that it will be an expensive endeavor.

Despite the doubts, the Trump administration is continuing to pursue Japan’s participation. The issue has gained a political edge with the looming threat of increased tariffs on Japanese autos and auto parts. These tariffs, which had been suspended until July 9 to allow for negotiations, add further complexity to the situation.

After the tariff announcement, some energy companies suggested they might be willing to engage in discussions about joining the Alaska LNG project, signaling a potential shift in their stance.
