Broome, a remote pearling and tourism town in northwest Western Australia, is set to replace its current fossil fuel-based power supply with a large solar farm and a six-hour battery, according to new proposals from state-owned Horizon Power.
The plan includes a 90-megawatt (MW) solar farm, supported by a 42 MW, 239 MWh battery, along with necessary network infrastructure.
This new renewable energy system is designed to replace the town’s existing power supply, which currently relies on gas and diesel. Broome, which has a population of 15,000 people and is located more than 2,000 kilometers north of Perth, will benefit from a cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable energy source, with added economic opportunities.
