The European Union has announced a definitive plan to phase out all remaining gas imports from Russia by the end of 2027, reinforcing its commitment to energy independence and reducing reliance on Russian fossil fuels.
EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen outlined the two-step strategy, which includes:
A ban on new and short-term spot contracts with Russian gas suppliers by the end of 2025.
A complete halt of all remaining Russian gas imports by the end of 2027.
“Today the European Union sends a very clear message to Russia: no more will we permit Russia to weaponise energy against us,” Jorgensen said.
The move builds on the EU’s 2022 embargo on Russian oil and reflects increasing resolve to sever economic ties with the Kremlin following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Jorgensen added,
“No more will we allow our member states to be blackmailed. No more will we indirectly help fill up the war chest in the Kremlin.”
The challenge remains steep, as several EU nations still rely significantly on Russian gas. The plan signals a strong geopolitical and energy transition commitment, aimed at bolstering energy security across the bloc.
