China Expected to Sustain Robust Oil Stockpiling Through 2026, Industry Experts Say

by Yuki

China’s aggressive accumulation of crude oil reserves, which has played a pivotal role in absorbing surplus global production this year, is projected to continue at a similar pace into 2026. This outlook was presented by Frederic Lasserre, Chief Strategist and Global Head of Research and Analysis at Gunvor Group, during the APPEC conference held on Monday in Singapore.

Continued Strategic Accumulation

Lasserre highlighted that China’s oil purchases accelerated significantly from March 2024, with the country stockpiling crude at an impressive rate. “We started to see a very impressive rate of stockpiling, close to one million barrels per day,” he stated. According to Gunvor’s analysis, China’s current storage facilities are filled to approximately 60% capacity, indicating substantial room for further increases in reserves over the coming years.

Impact on Global Oil Markets

Jim Burkhard, Global Head of Crude Oil Market Research at S&P Global Commodity Insights, also addressed the conference, noting that China—the world’s largest importer of crude oil—has been building up inventories at a rate of about 530,000 barrels per day (bpd) so far in 2024. This marks one of the fastest annual rates of increase outside the extraordinary circumstances seen in 2020. Burkhard emphasized that China’s actions have been instrumental in absorbing excess supply on the global market, particularly during the second quarter of this year.

“China’s total onshore crude oil inventories are now around 1.4 billion barrels,” Burkhard reported. “That is a very large increase—greater than global oil demand growth.”

Comparison with Global Demand Trends

S&P Global estimates that worldwide oil demand growth will reach approximately 700,000 bpd in 2024. Of this figure, more than half is attributed to natural gas liquids and biofuels, while crude oil itself accounts for roughly 350,000 bpd in incremental demand. The scale of China’s stockpiling efforts thus outpaces overall global demand growth for crude oil this year.

Strategic Implications for China and Global Markets

China’s sustained strategy of building its reserves not only reinforces its energy security but also exerts a stabilizing influence on international oil markets. By absorbing surplus production through rapid stockpiling, China helps moderate price volatility and supports producers facing oversupply conditions.

Industry analysts suggest that China’s approach reflects both economic foresight and geopolitical calculation. Maintaining ample reserves allows Beijing to hedge against future supply disruptions or price spikes while leveraging its position as a dominant player in global energy markets.

Outlook for 2026 and Beyond

Looking ahead to 2026, experts anticipate that China will maintain its current momentum in oil stockpiling unless significant shifts occur in domestic consumption patterns or international trade relations. With storage facilities still underutilized and strategic interests aligned with continued accumulation, China is likely to remain a key force shaping global crude balances for years to come.

The implications extend beyond immediate market dynamics; as other major importers observe China’s tactics, there may be broader moves toward enhanced energy security and inventory management worldwide.

Conclusion

China’s ongoing commitment to expanding its crude oil inventories has emerged as a defining feature of global energy markets in recent years. The country’s ability to absorb excess supply has provided crucial support amid fluctuating demand and production cycles worldwide. As industry leaders forecast sustained stockpiling through at least 2026, stakeholders across the sector will closely monitor Beijing’s strategic decisions for their far-reaching impact on prices, trade flows, and energy security.
