On Thursday, a spokesperson from China’s Foreign Ministry emphasized the nation’s commitment to “normal, legitimate economic, trade, and energy cooperation with countries around the world, including Russia.” This statement comes as U.S. President Donald Trump urges countries to halt their imports of Russian fuel in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The Chinese government maintains that its energy dealings are within the bounds of international law and reflect standard global practices. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stressed that China will continue its cooperation based on mutual benefit and respect for sovereignty. He noted, “The actions of the United States are a typical example of unilateral bullying and economic coercion,” underscoring Beijing’s dissatisfaction with Washington’s approach.
President Trump has taken a firm stance against nations buying oil from Russia. On Wednesday, he claimed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him that India would stop purchasing Russian oil. However, India did not confirm or deny any change in its policy regarding Russian energy imports.
Trump also accused China and India of indirectly supporting the war in Ukraine by continuing their purchases of Russian oil. He called on European allies to immediately cease buying fuel from Moscow, insisting that such actions are necessary to exert economic pressure on Russia and help end the conflict.
When questioned about further U.S. pressure on Thursday, China’s Foreign Ministry reiterated its stance on maintaining legitimate trade relations.
