China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has brought its Wenchang 16-2 oilfield development project online, boosting production in the South China Sea. The project, fully owned and operated by CNOOC, primarily utilizes existing infrastructure from nearby Wenchang oilfields. The field produces light crude and is located in an area with an average water depth of approximately 150 meters.
The development features a new jacket platform that combines oil and gas production, offshore drilling, operational completion, and personnel accommodation. CNOOC plans to commission a total of 15 development wells, with plateau production expected to reach roughly 11,200 barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2027.
The Wenchang 16-2 project follows earlier production starts at the Wenchang 9-7 oilfield development in April and Wenchang 19-1 oilfield Phase II in March.
Additionally, CNOOC recently brought the Dongfang 1-1 gas field 13-3 Block development online, marking the first high-temperature, high-pressure, low-permeability natural gas project offshore China.
These developments reflect CNOOC’s ongoing strategy to expand its offshore production capabilities and strengthen China’s energy output in the South China Sea.
