Texas has firmly cemented its role as the powerhouse of natural gas production in the United States, more than doubling its output over the last 25 years. By 2025, the state accounted for 28.5% of the nation’s total natural gas supply, surpassing the combined production of Pennsylvania and New Mexico. If Texas were an independent nation, it would rank as the world’s third-largest natural gas producer, trailing only Russia and the rest of the United States.
Since the year 2000, Texas’ natural gas output skyrocketed by 137.7%, rising from 5.7 million cubic feet (MMcf) to 13.6 MMcf in 2025. This impressive surge outpaced the overall U.S. growth rate of 97.5% during the same period, highlighting Texas’ pivotal role in expanding America’s domestic energy resources. While other states such as Pennsylvania have also seen substantial increases, none come close to matching Texas’ scale and influence.
Texas not only leads in sheer volume but also drives a significant share of national production growth. The state contributed to 33.5% of the increase in U.S. natural gas output since 2000, with Pennsylvania following at 31.9%. Despite Pennsylvania’s rapid expansion, it accounted for just 16.1% of total U.S. production in 2025—less than two-thirds of Texas’ nearly one-third share.
As of early 2026, Texas maintains near-record levels of natural gas production, generating about 29.6% of U.S. output by April—an increase of one percentage point over the previous year. This steady growth has reinforced Texas’ position as America’s largest energy exporter, responsible for more than two-thirds of U.S. energy exports in 2025.
Global energy markets have faced mounting pressure due to ongoing instability in the Middle East, which has tightened liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies worldwide. This situation has increased reliance on U.S. exports to sustain international energy security, placing Texas’ expanding natural gas capacity at the heart of global supply chains.
Looking ahead, forecasts from the U.S. Energy Information Administration project continued growth in natural gas production through 2050 to meet rising domestic and international demand. With its abundant reserves and cutting-edge infrastructure, Texas is well-positioned to maintain its leading role and remain a crucial player on the global energy stage.
