Buzzi Unicem USA is making significant strides in its effort to reduce carbon emissions by converting its cement plants from coal and petcoke to natural gas. This transition is part of the company’s larger environmental initiative called “Our Journey to Net Zero,” which aims to drastically lower direct CO2 emissions across its operations.
The conversion involves installing custom-designed flexible burner systems that were developed through a collaboration between Italian and U.S. engineering teams. These systems require major modifications to the existing kiln and calciner structures, as well as upgrades to enhance safety measures. These improvements are critical to ensure efficient and reliable operation using natural gas.
Several plants have already completed the conversion process. The Alamo, Festus, Maryneal, and Pryor facilities are now fully operating on natural gas. Meanwhile, the Cape Girardeau and Greencastle plants are in the final stages of upgrades, with full commissioning expected during the winter outages of 2026.
Once these final changes are implemented, all of Buzzi Unicem’s cement plants in the United States will be capable of running on natural gas, except for the Stockertown facility. This shift is expected to cut the company’s direct carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 50 percent, marking a major environmental achievement for the cement industry.
The move toward natural gas aligns with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. Cement production is known for being energy-intensive and a significant source of CO2 emissions worldwide. By switching fuel sources, Buzzi Unicem USA is demonstrating leadership in adopting cleaner energy solutions within heavy industry sectors.

As the final plants complete their upgrades, Buzzi Unicem USA expects its entire U.S. fleet (minus one) to operate more sustainably by relying on natural gas.
