Zefiro Methane Corp., a leading U.S. environmental services firm specializing in methane emissions control, has announced an expansion of its drilling operations through its subsidiary, Plants & Goodwin, Inc. (P&G). The company will deploy two additional drilling rigs to support a major natural gas producer in the plugging and abandonment of wells spread across Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, and Kentucky. This move builds upon an existing agreement where one rig was dedicated for the entire year of 2026.
The intensified deployment aims to speed up the remediation process for at least 26 wells, addressing complex environmental challenges posed by inactive oil and gas sites. This initiative forms part of a wider industry commitment to fulfill Asset Retirement Obligations (ARO), which are critical in preventing environmental damage from defunct wells. Many targeted wells require specialized expertise due to their depth and difficult terrain, areas where P&G’s experienced crews excel.
This operational scaling became feasible after Zefiro’s strategic acquisition of equipment from Viking Well Service, including five derrick rigs valued at $4.3 million. Before this acquisition, P&G’s rig fleet was fully engaged with ongoing projects and routine maintenance schedules. The addition of new rigs enables P&G to respond effectively to increasing demand for well plugging services while reinforcing its long-standing client partnerships.
Zefiro’s leadership highlighted recent positive developments, including three consecutive profitable quarters and a substantial equity financing round that supports their growth trajectory. CEO Catherine Flax underscored the importance of the equipment acquisition as a key driver for revenue expansion. Meanwhile, Senior Vice President Luke Plants pointed out the high barriers to entry in the well-plugging sector, emphasizing that P&G’s technical proficiency positions it strongly for sustained market growth.
This latest rig deployment marks the ninth consecutive year that P&G has backed this particular client’s annual plug-and-abandonment program. The campaign is scheduled to continue through October 2026 and encompasses both private contracts and public environmental remediation projects. Zefiro remains committed to leveraging its expertise and resources to promote responsible natural gas production practices while fostering ongoing business growth.
