The Northwestern United States is preparing to increase its reliance on natural gas power plants to ensure a stable and affordable electricity supply despite regional clean energy goals. The Northwest Power and Conservation Council has indicated plans to recommend the construction of new natural gas-fired facilities, particularly in Idaho and Montana, to support grid reliability through 2032. This development contrasts with Oregon and Washington’s existing clean-energy laws that aim to limit or phase out natural gas usage in power generation.
The council’s assessment found that the four-state region, including Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana, will need at least 2,000 megawatts of new natural gas capacity to maintain reliable service and keep electricity rates manageable as demand grows. While alternatives such as increased wind and solar energy are being considered, planners warn these options may lead to higher costs and less dependable electricity.
Idaho Power has announced plans for two new natural gas plants named South Hills near Twin Falls and Peregrine in Elmore County. These plants are expected to add about 800 megawatts of power capacity by 2030. The utility company cites rapid population growth and expanding industrial activity as reasons for this expansion. Despite investing heavily in renewables—adding 500 megawatts since 2021 and planning another 500 megawatts of renewable energy and battery storage—Idaho Power acknowledges that growth is outpacing these clean energy additions.
Currently, Idaho Power’s energy mix includes approximately 40% hydroelectric power, 20% natural gas, and 20% from wind, solar, and battery storage. Officials stress that no rate increases have yet been imposed due to the new projects, although future costs could affect customer bills after regulatory review post-construction.
Meanwhile, the Northwest Power and Conservation Council’s upcoming ninth power plan will highlight the challenge of balancing clean energy ambitions with the practical need for reliable power. Public hearings are scheduled before the final plan adoption later this year. Some regional representatives emphasize the importance of maintaining grid stability during cold winters east of the Cascade Range.
Beyond the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean also hold significant undeveloped natural gas reserves that could boost economic growth and energy access if properly harnessed. However, regulatory differences among countries, financing challenges, and infrastructure gaps currently limit development in those regions. Experts suggest stronger cooperation and clearer policies are essential for unlocking this potential.
The broader picture shows that while renewable energy continues to expand globally, natural gas remains a crucial component in meeting immediate electricity demands and supporting grid reliability amid population growth and industrial expansion. The Northwest’s plans reflect a pragmatic approach as states navigate the complex transition toward cleaner energy futures.
