Oil Prices Rise Slightly Amid US Inventory Decline and Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks

by Yuki

Oil prices saw a modest increase on Wednesday, bolstered by industry data indicating a decline in US crude inventories. According to the American Petroleum Institute (API), commercial crude stockpiles in the United States fell by 2.48 million barrels last week. This drawdown surpassed market expectations, which had anticipated a decrease of around 1.9 million barrels. The larger-than-expected reduction suggests resilient demand in the world’s largest oil-consuming nation, lending upward support to global oil prices. International benchmark Brent crude traded at $62.46 per barrel as of 9:47 a.m. local time, representing a 0.1% rise from its previous close of $62.34. Meanwhile, the US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also edged up by approximately 0.1%, reaching $58.59 compared to $58.51 in the prior session.

The API data is viewed as a preliminary indicator ahead of official figures from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), which are expected to be released later in the day. Investors and analysts closely monitor these reports for insights into supply and demand trends that can affect market pricing.

Russia-Ukraine Peace Efforts Ease Supply Concerns

While the reduction in US crude inventories provided some support for oil prices, ongoing diplomatic efforts between Russia and Ukraine tempered further gains by easing concerns over potential supply disruptions. Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yury Ushakov reported that President Vladimir Putin engaged in talks with representatives of US President Donald Trump, discussing four key documents aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict.

Ushakov described the meeting as “useful, constructive and informative,” highlighting that both parties explored opportunities for a long-term, peaceful settlement. Although Putin expressed critical views regarding several proposals, he emphasized a mutual willingness to continue working towards durable peace in Ukraine.

These diplomatic developments have lessened the geopolitical risk premium associated with oil markets, as progress towards peace reduces fears of supply shocks stemming from escalating tensions in the region.

Geopolitical Risks Remain Despite Diplomatic Progress

Despite signs of progress in peace discussions, underlying geopolitical risks persist. Prior to his scheduled meeting in Moscow with Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner, President Putin accused Ukraine of “piracy” in the Black Sea due to alleged attacks on oil tankers. In response, Putin warned that Russia would expand its strikes on Ukrainian ports and vessels entering those ports as retaliation.

Such threats contribute to ongoing market uncertainty and have historically weighed on oil prices. However, current diplomatic initiatives appear to be mitigating some concerns about major supply disruptions, resulting in more restrained price movements compared to periods of heightened conflict.

Market Outlook: Balancing Supply Data and Geopolitical Tensions

As traders await official inventory data from the EIA, the oil market remains attentive to both supply fundamentals and evolving geopolitical dynamics. The combination of resilient US demand and tentative progress in Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations has created a complex environment for price formation.

While industry data points to robust consumption and declining stockpiles—factors that typically support higher prices—efforts towards conflict resolution have helped moderate expectations of extreme volatility or significant disruptions to global oil supplies. Analysts suggest that continued monitoring of both inventory trends and diplomatic developments will be crucial for forecasting future movements in oil prices.
