Vår Energi’s Appraisal Well Confirms Significant Oil Discovery in the Barents Sea

by Yuki

Vår Energi has confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons at its appraisal well located in production licence 229, approximately 90 kilometres from Hammerfest in the Barents Sea. The well, which was drilled by COSL’s COSL Prospector rig, substantiated findings previously identified in the original discovery well, 7122/8-3 S, announced earlier in February. This latest appraisal supports the existence of oil within the same geological formations as the initial discovery, strengthening confidence in the site’s potential for future development.

The well reached measured and vertical depths of 2,986 and 2,793 metres below sea level respectively, terminating within the Klappmyss Formation of the Lower Triassic. The water depth at this location is recorded at 406 metres. Upon completion of drilling operations, the well was permanently plugged and abandoned, following standard industry procedures to ensure environmental safety and operational compliance.

Detailed Reservoir Analysis and Estimated Reserves

Extensive data acquisition and sampling were conducted during drilling, though no formation testing was performed. Analysis revealed an 11-metre oil column within the Tubåen Formation of the Realgrunnen Subgroup. This section included a total of 8.5 metres of high-quality reservoir rock, indicating promising characteristics for future oil extraction.

Additional reservoir intervals were identified in the Kobbe Formation, with a cumulative thickness of 48 metres. However, these sections were aquiferous, meaning they primarily contained water rather than hydrocarbons. In contrast, an impressive 80-metre oil column was proven in the Klappmyss Formation, although the reservoir quality here was found to be poor. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the subsurface conditions and contribute to more accurate reserve estimations.

Based on current data, the Barents Sea discovery is now estimated to contain between 2.8 and 10.1 million standard cubic metres of recoverable oil equivalent. This translates to approximately 18–64 million barrels of oil, a significant volume that could contribute meaningfully to regional production if future development proceeds as planned.

Strategic Importance and Future Outlook

The confirmation of substantial recoverable reserves strengthens Vår Energi’s position in Norway’s offshore sector and highlights ongoing exploration success in the Barents Sea region. The company’s methodical approach—including thorough data collection and adherence to best practices for well abandonment—demonstrates its commitment to responsible resource management.

While formation testing was not carried out during this phase, the wealth of acquired geological data will support further analysis and decision-making regarding potential field development. Industry experts note that continued appraisal activities in this area may unlock additional resources and pave the way for new investments in infrastructure and technology.

As global energy demands evolve and Norway seeks to balance sustainability with economic growth, discoveries like this one underscore the importance of advanced exploration techniques and careful stewardship of natural resources. Vår Energi’s recent success serves as a testament to both technological capability and strategic foresight within Norway’s oil and gas sector.
