Norwegian Offshore Directorate Grants Vår Energi Drilling Permit for North Sea Operations

by Yuki

Vår Energi, a major player in Norway’s energy sector, has received official approval from the Norwegian Offshore Directorate to proceed with drilling operations on wellbore 25/8-C-23 D. This permit, valid under production license 027, extends from May 23, 1969, to March 1, 2030. The drilling will take place at the Ringhorne field, a significant site within the country’s extensive North Sea oil and gas portfolio.

Holding a substantial 90% interest in this license, Vår Energi leads the development efforts, while Kistos Energy participates as a partner with a 10% stake. The collaboration reflects Norway’s strategy of leveraging partnerships to optimize resource extraction and technological innovation in offshore operations. The new drilling initiative is part of a broader plan to explore and expand existing deposits in the region.

Prince Updip Prospect at Ringhorne Field

The wellbore targeted by this permit is associated with the Prince Updip prospect. This exploration effort aims to further develop the Ringhorne deposit, located approximately nine kilometers north of the FPSO Balder vessel. The Ringhorne field is integrated into the larger Balder complex, which has been designed with facilities for accommodation, drilling, and wellhead operations. These are connected to both FPSO Balder and FPSO Jotun units for processing crude oil, storing petroleum products, and exporting natural gas.

The strategic location of the Balder field—situated centrally in the North Sea and just west of the Grane field—makes it a focal point for Norwegian offshore energy activities. Over recent years, upgrades to infrastructure have supported continued resource development and ensured compliance with evolving regulatory standards.

Development Strategy and Investment Decisions

In June 2020, Norwegian authorities approved a revised plan for development and operation (PDO) for both the Balder and Ringhorne fields. This updated strategy focuses on extending the productive life of these assets through advanced engineering solutions, including relocating FPSO Jotun and drilling additional subsea wells.

Vår Energi has shown commitment to long-term investment in these fields. The company reached its final investment decision (FID) for the Balder Phase VI project following its earlier sanctioning of Balder Phase V in late 2024. These projects are expected to enhance recovery rates and ensure sustainable production over the coming years.

Regulatory Oversight and Industry Collaboration

The drilling permit issued by the Norwegian Offshore Directorate follows previous approvals from Havtil—the Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority—for the same wellbore. These regulatory bodies play an essential role in maintaining high standards for safety, environmental protection, and operational efficiency across Norway’s offshore oil and gas industry.

As Vår Energi advances its drilling plans at Ringhorne, ongoing collaboration with Kistos Energy will help maximize resource value while adhering to strict regulatory requirements. The company’s activities at Balder and Ringhorne continue to contribute significantly to Norway’s position as a leading producer of oil and gas in Europe.
