Norway’s oil and gas production exceeded official expectations in August, the Norwegian Offshore Directorate (NOD) reported on Tuesday. Total output was 2.6% higher than forecast, highlighting the country’s continued strength as a major energy supplier in Europe.
Norway is Europe’s largest supplier of natural gas and a significant oil producer. Production levels can fluctuate monthly due to maintenance, technical issues, and temporary stoppages at nearly 100 offshore fields. These variations affect both oil and gas output, making precise forecasting a challenge.
In August, combined production of oil, condensate, natural gas liquids, and natural gas reached 0.670 million standard cubic meters per day. This is equivalent to 4.21 million barrels of oil per day and represents a 0.4% increase compared with the same month last year.
Natural gas production in August fell slightly to 332 million cubic meters per day, down from 349 million cubic meters in August 2024. Despite the year-on-year decline, production exceeded the forecast of 328.3 million cubic meters per day by 1.2%, the NOD reported on its website. This shows that Norway continues to meet Europe’s energy demand, even amid operational challenges.
Crude oil output also rose, reaching 1.92 million barrels per day in August. This is up from 1.78 million barrels per day a year earlier and above the forecast of 1.80 million barrels per day, according to preliminary NOD data. Analysts say the increase reflects improved efficiency at several offshore platforms and stable production from Norway’s largest oil fields.
The data underlines Norway’s role as a reliable energy supplier at a time when Europe faces energy security concerns. NOD officials said production is expected to remain stable in the coming months, though temporary shutdowns for maintenance may cause minor fluctuations.
